Spartacus was born and raised in Thrace. At a very tender age, about twelve years, his mother sold him to the slave traders. Spartacus was force to work in mine as a slave. During his stay at mine, Spartacus attempted to bite a guard and he tied and left in hot sun to die as an example to the rest of slaves. Fortunately, Bitiutus, a gladiator’s master visited mine in search of slaves to train them as gladiators. Spartacus was offered to him.
Bititutus was paid huge amount of money by Crassus to organize two fighting matches for him to watch. This was a fight to the death. The second match was Spartacus to fight against Dianus, a slave too. Although Dianus had opportunities to kill Spartacus, he never did so. Dianus was then killed by some guards. Crassus took with him verenia, a female slave. Once the gladiator trainer commended about verenia to Spartacus, he murdered him. On seeing that, all the other slaves attacked the guards and almost all slaves escaped, including Spartacus.
Escape From Slavery
Majority of the slaves who fled joined to form a slave army which Spartacus became the commander. Verenia as well joined the slave’s army together with Antinilus who escaped from the Crassus. Spartacus organized a training camp for the slave’s army to train themselves on how to fight. Antinilus revealed to Spartacus that he had come to fight. When the Roman army led by their commander Glaberus went to attack and fights the slave’s army at their camp during the night, Spartacus spared him and sent him back to Rome with the message that they were not interested in war but their freedom.
Eventually, Spartacus met with private ships negotiator and offered him a box of valuables for his services. Spartacus wanted to use the ship to move his army from Italy for their freedom. However, Spartacus came to find out later that Crassus had hired a Pholecian ships and fled, so he decided not to leave.
The Reign and Death of Spartacus
The slaves’ army was attacked the Rome’ army for the second time and this time round they were almost completely destroyed. Crassus demanded to know who Spartacus was. Nevertheless, when asked the survivors to identify him, all survivors claimed to be Spartacus. Spartacus eventually strengthened led his army to fight against Romans’ troops. He defeated several Rome’s troops and overran the southern Italy. The Spartacus continued to rule in the southern Italy until in 72 BC when he killed in a war against Lucania troops. However, Spartacus remained to be an icon for the slaves’ freedom fighters up to date.
