Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps

Mission:

The Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps (CO VMRC) program provides veterinary professionals with the training and credentialing necessary to support animal health and public health emergency responses.

Program affiliation:

The CO VMRC is a Medical Reserve Corps Unit under the CO Medical Reserve Corps program and is supported by a broad multi-agency partnership of the following entities:

  • Colorado Department of Agriculture
  • Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation and the CO SART program
  • Colorado State University
  • Colorado Veterinary Medical Association
  • Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians
  • Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CO Public Health and Medical Volunteer System)
  • Colorado Division of Emergency Management
  • US Department of Agriculture

Who should join the CO VMRC?

The COVMRC program provides an opportunity for the entire veterinary practice team to participate, including:

  • Veterinarians
  • Veterinary technicians
  • Veterinary assistants, office managers and all support staff members
  • Students in veterinary medical programs
  • Retired veterinary professionals

How do I join the CO VMRC?

To join CO VMRC, contact Unit Coordinator at 303.539.7633 to receive additional information on the unit, training and registration. 

Once regisgered with CO VMRC you can go to www.MedicalReserveCorps.gov and click on register to receive email updates from Medical Reserve Corps as well.

Remember, it's for the whole veterinary practice team!

Deployment:

CO VMRC personnel may be deployed one of three general ways:

  1. By local emergency management to provide veterinary and public health support in emergency situations.
  2. By the State Veterinarian in an animal health emergency or other state-level incident where veterinary personnel are needed.
  3. CO VMRC members may also sign up for the National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps for deployment as paid temporary USDA employees during and emergency event in the US or even in support of other nations!  CO VMRC members will receive information on signing up for NAHERC.                                      

COVMRC:  Training Program

The CO VMRC introductory training program includes four basic training modules combined with an interactive scenario-based exercise.

The four introductory training modules include:

  1. Introduction to Animal Emergency Management for Veterinary Professionals
  2. Biodefense and Zoonoses
  3. Overview of CBRNE Threats for Veterinary Professionals (CBRNE = chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive)
  4. Personal Preparedness and Business Contingency Planning
CO VMRC Introductory Training is provided at no charge to participants through the support of CVMF, Colorado State University, USDA and the Colorado Department of Agriculture

Additional initial training requirments include online or classroom training for the following.

  1. IS-700: National Incident Management System
  2. I-100:  Incident Command System
  3. I-200:  Incident Command System  (200 level is highly recommended)

Those members who also want to be credentialed under the Colorado Public Health and Medical Volunteer System (CPHMVS) should take the one-day training offered in various locations around the state through
